FLUX 3 vs FLUX.2

FLUX.2 is the battle-tested image family with open weights and a huge tooling ecosystem. FLUX 3 is Black Forest Labs' new multimodal foundation model that learns images, video, and audio together, currently in Early Access.

Our verdict

FLUX.2 remains the safe choice for production image pipelines today. FLUX 3 is the future of the family: pick it when you need video or audio-aware generation and can live with Early Access rough edges.

Which one should you pick?

Pick FLUX 3 if you want one model that spans images, video, and audio with physics-aware motion, and you are comfortable building on an Early Access API.

Pick FLUX.2 if you need proven, controllable image generation now, with open weights, LoRA ecosystems, and predictable costs.

Is FLUX 3 a replacement for FLUX.2?

Eventually, but not yet. FLUX 3 is in Early Access and pricing is not final; FLUX.2 remains fully supported and is still the recommended production image model.

Does FLUX 3 have open weights?

Not at launch. FLUX.2 offers open weights for its Dev and Schnell tiers, while FLUX 3 is currently API-only Early Access.

Can FLUX 3 generate video?

Yes. It is a multimodal flow model trained jointly on images, video, and audio, and Black Forest Labs has shipped FLUX 3 Video as part of the family.
