Otter.ai vs Granola vs Fireflies.ai — Best AI meeting note-taker for 2026

We ran the same three meetings through all three apps for a month. Here's which one earns a permanent spot in your stack — and which one you can delete after the trial.

If you're in more than three meetings a week, the difference between a good AI note-taker and a bad one is roughly two hours of your life back. We tested Otter.ai, Granola and Fireflies.ai side-by-side for a full month, same calls, same accents, same crosstalk, and the gap between them is bigger than the marketing pages suggest.

• Pick Granola if you mostly meet 1-on-1 or in small teams, work on a Mac, and care about summary quality more than fancy collaboration features.
• Pick Otter.ai if your team already uses Slack/Notion/Google Workspace heavily and you want low-friction sharing across non-technical teammates.
• Pick Fireflies.ai if you're in sales or customer success and need conversation analytics, talk-time ratios, and HubSpot/Salesforce push.

Transcription accuracy

This is what people assume matters most. In 2026 it barely does, all three are within 1% of each other on clean audio. The differentiation is everywhere else.

Translation: don't choose based on transcription. Choose based on what happens after.

• Otter.ai scored 96.4% on our test set (mix of US, UK and Indian English).
• Fireflies.ai scored 96.1%.
• Granola scored 95.8%, slightly behind because it relies on your Mac's microphone instead of joining the call as a separate bot.

Summary quality

This is the actual battleground. We graded each summary against the human-written notes one of us took during the same meeting.

If you're going to read one summary back a week later and want it to actually mean something, Granola wins.

• Granola consistently produced the most useful summaries, fewer "the team discussed pricing" filler sentences, more concrete decisions and owners. It clearly does extra reasoning before writing.
• Otter.ai summaries are competent but generic. Good enough for sharing with stakeholders, weak for personal recall.
• Fireflies.ai summaries are the most structured (action items, decisions, questions) but sometimes hallucinate when audio is unclear.

The "no bot" experience

This is the dark-horse factor. Otter and Fireflies join your call as a visible bot named "Otter" or "Fred." Granola runs in the background on your laptop. After three weeks of testing, we noticed:

Privacy & where the audio goes

For client work in regulated industries, Granola is the easiest to defend in a security review.

• Otter.ai, audio uploaded to AWS US, transcribed server-side, used to improve their models unless you opt out.
• Fireflies.ai, audio uploaded to AWS US, similar policy. Enterprise plans get region-pinning and no model training.
• Granola, audio is processed locally where possible, only the transcript is sent to OpenAI / Anthropic for summarisation. The most privacy-friendly of the three by design.

What we'd actually recommend

If you can only try one: start with Granola for 14 days. It's the one most likely to stay in your stack for a year. If your team is bigger than 5 people and lives in Slack, add Otter.ai for the team-shareable transcripts. Skip Fireflies unless you're running an outbound sales motion.

Pair whichever you pick with Krisp for call audio cleanup, both Otter and Fireflies transcribe noticeably better when noise is removed before they get the audio.

The right note-taker isn't the smartest one. It's the one you'll actually keep open during every call without thinking about it. After a month, that was Granola for us.
