In May 2026 the AI image generator market has narrowed to five tools that actually matter for production work, and they each win at something different. We ran the same six prompts through every one of them: a brand-style hero illustration, a photorealistic product shot, a marketing poster with text, a fantasy character, a UI mockup, and a kid's storybook page.

Here's what we found.

The 30-second verdict

• Midjourney if you want the most beautiful image with the least effort and your output is brand, editorial, or art-direction work.
• ChatGPT Images if you need the model to actually follow your prompt, especially when text in the image matters.
• Adobe Firefly if your work has to be commercially safe (licensed training data) and lives in Photoshop or Illustrator.
• Leonardo AI if you're producing game assets, character sheets, or anything that needs consistency across many images.
• Stable Diffusion 3.5 if you're building a product on top, want zero per-image cost, and have the chops to host it.

Aesthetic quality

Tested on the brand-hero and storybook prompts where "does this look like a human made it" is the bar.

• Midjourney, still the gold standard. The lighting, composition, and colour grading instinct is in a different league. Three iterations and you've got something a designer would be proud to ship.
• ChatGPT Images, competent and confident, but more "good stock photo" than "designer made this."
• Firefly, clean and safe but the most generic look of the five. You can tell it was trained on licensed stock.
• Leonardo, strong at stylised work, weaker at clean editorial.
• Stable Diffusion 3.5, depends entirely on your LoRA / fine-tune. The base model is mid; with a good fine-tune it can rival Midjourney.

Prompt adherence

We wrote a 50-word prompt with eight specific elements (subject, action, two props, palette, lighting, camera angle, mood). We counted how many landed.

• Stable Diffusion 3.5, 6.6 / 8 with the right sampler.

• Midjourney, 5.2 / 8. Beautiful, but it interprets aggressively. Niji v6 mode helps.

Text inside images

This is the killer feature gap.

If your workflow includes posters, social tiles with captions, or any in-image typography, ChatGPT Images is the only sensible default.

• ChatGPT Images, near-perfect. Posters, product packaging, slide graphics with real readable copy. Nothing else is close.
• Firefly, solid for short labels and headlines.
• Stable Diffusion 3.5, much improved over SDXL, still hit-and-miss.
• Leonardo, workable for short text only.
• Midjourney, visibly broken on anything more than a single word.

Commercial safety

For agencies and regulated industries, Firefly is still the easiest one to defend in a procurement meeting.
